According to The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002, it is essential for an employer or landlord to identify hazardous substances in the workplace and the different ways they can present a risk to the health of individuals on their premises.

Landlords and employers are obliged to show consistent evidence of compliance with relevant regulations and actively monitor the water systems on their premises for hazardous bacteria. Water sampling allows you to confirm or rule out contamination – crucial for keeping the water on your premises safe and bacteria-free.
Legionella Risk Assessment
Employers must clearly meet the health and safety standards, established by government agencies such as the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Care Quality Commission (CQC), to ensure they are not breaking water safety regulations. This often includes the monitoring of water systems on your premises for the presence of bacteria such as legionella, which occurs commonly in natural and artificial water systems.

How do you test for legionella in water?
During Pseudomonas Aeruginosa and legionella water testing, a trained specialist measures samples from taps and outlets. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn, and sample containers are sterilised to ensure an accurate measurement is taken where no contamination of the samples has occurred.
Water Sampling
Samples can be taken from taps or outlets. There are various methods and customer requirements, but we can take the first sample immediately, without any disinfection or flushing of the tap and without the tap having been used for several hours. Temperature measurements are also taken, and the sample of water is mixed with a biocide‑neutralizing agent in a container. The collection method is then repeated to take a second sample after the tap has been flushed, disinfected in-line with site health and safety requirements, and the temperature is stable.
Disinfection involves removing any fittings and using a flexible plastic Pasteur pipette, wash bottle, or other appropriate means to inject disinfectant inside the nozzle of the tap until it runs out. Two minutes should be allowed for the disinfectant process to take place. All of this must be done while wearing protective goggles.
After sampling, the containers are then labelled with unique identifiers and testing details such as date, time, and location of the sample site. They’re then kept at ambient temperatures and protected from sunlight while they’re transported for storage and analysis. For legionella water testing and the measurement of other bacteria, samples are tested within 48 hours for accurate analysis.
Samples will show if bacteria are at safe levels and comparisons between samples can indicate if there are any potential sources of contamination. If the levels of bacteria are considerably higher in the pre-flush sample compared to the post-flush sample, this suggests that there is a source of contamination near the outlet. If higher counts occur in specific outlets but not others, this also indicates that contamination is around specific outlets. If the samples suggest that circulating water is contaminated, further testing will help identify the source of the systemic problem.
